Free Drive-Thur Rabies Clinic

The owners of all dogs seven (7) months of age or older are required to annually apply to the licensing clerk of the municipality in which he or she resides for a dog license. In order for the license to be issued, the owner must present proof that a licensed veterinarian has vaccinated the dog against rabies and that the duration of immunity from that vaccination extends through at least ten months of the twelve-month licensing period. An exemption to the rabies inoculation requirement shall be granted if the owner presents written certification from a licensed veterinarian that the dog cannot be vaccinated due to a medical condition or course of therapy.

All dog licenses in Woolwich Township expire on December 31st of each year, regardless of when the license was purchased. A late fee of $10.00 per dog will be enforced April 1st. The license must be issued in the name of an adult member of the household.

Bring proof of rabies certificate valid through October 31st of the current licensing year or beyond.
Show spayed/neutered certificate if not on file.
Dog licenses are due first week in January.
A $10.00 late fee is charged starting April 1st.

Leashing

No dog shall be permitted off the premises of the owner or the person keeping or harboring such dog unless said dog shall be on a leash held by a person over the age of 12 years and who shall have complete control of the dog

How many pets?

Dogs and cats, as pets are permitted, but not more than three of each, over four months of age per lot

Harborer deemed owner

Any person who shall keep or harbor any dog of licensing age, as defined by N.J.S.A. 4:19-15.1, for a period of 10 days or more shall, for the purposes of this article, be deemed to be the owner of the dog or dogs so kept and harbored.

Nuisances; prohibited acts

Habitual barking: No person shall own any dog which habitually cries or barks in a manner which would annoy or disturb a reasonable person. An “annoyance or disturbance,” for the purpose of this section, shall be defined as barking, howling or crying continuously for a period of 10 minutes or more or intermittently for 30 minutes or more. A violation of this section shall subject the owner of the offending dog to the penalties for a violation of this chapter.

Benefits of Dog Licensure Licensing dogs and placing the registration tag on the dog’s collar has many benefits for the dog owner, as well as for the citizens, including the following:

• Licensed dogs are vaccinated against rabies (with some exceptions explained below) and those with current license tags on their collars are considered generally protected from the disease

• A licensed dog that wanders off the owner’s property or gets lost can be traced and quickly returned to its owner by animal control officers • When persons are bitten by a licensed dog, the owner is usually found, and the dog is placed under a 10 day confinement and observation that will prevent the bite victim from needing to begin rabies post-exposure prophylaxis

• Dog licensing is mandatory in all New Jersey municipalities and the licensing fee is much less than the fines and penalties for having unlicensed dogs

• License fees support animal control, animal sheltering and rabies control activities within the municipality

• Dog licensing fees help fund testing of suspect rabid wildlife, the free State-sponsored municipal rabies vaccination clinics and the State operated low cost spay and neuter program
